In Syria, Islamist groups close to the ruling power committed massacres against the Alawite minority under the pretext of suppressing an insurrection of supporters of the former Assad regime. Around 1,000 civilians, mostly Alawites, were killed. The Syrian army is moving to villages near Latakia to repel fighters linked to Bashar al-Assad. The transitional president declared the end of operations in western Syria, but retreating armed groups left destroyed villages.
